Title: Recovery Efforts for the Puerto
Rican Amazon Parrot

Ricardo Valentin has been the
Aviculturist and manager of the Vivaldi
Aviary since 1999. He manages the
captive propagation program of the
critically endangered Puerto Rican
parrot for the Department of Natural and
Environmental Resources of Puerto Rico.
He has a bachelor’s degree in Biology
from the University of Puerto Rico at
Mayaguez. His master thesis was an
analysis of history of the captive
reproduction of the PR parrot. He has
been successful at breeding large
numbers of PR parrots. His success at
captive breeding has allowed the
creation of a second wild population of
the west of the island of Puerto Rico
that now boasts over forty birds.
Since he was a child he has loved
raising and breeding all kinds of
animals. Right now he lives at the
Vivaldi Aviary with the parrots, his
orchids and a few fish whose company he
find greatly soothing because they are
extremely weak biters and utterly
incapable of screaming.
